Gin Rummy for Beginners

Gin Rummy

If you have not played Gin Rummy before do not be discouraged. This card game has very simple rules that are easily understood even by very young players. It was started as card game for fun where families can gather together, young and old and play something that will suit everyone. The rules have not changed since then, variations have been added to make it more interesting, but basically the game remains the same. It’s enjoyable, interesting and can played for simple fun or at a competitive level.

The object of the game is to reduce your set of cards to a minimum, or if possible to zero which is “gin”, before your opponent does. Reduction of cards can be done through “melds” or simply combining cards to reduce their point’s value to zero. An example is having three or four cards of the same value like 3 “sevens” of different suites, or 3 “kings” and so on so forth. When a meld is done, the count or point value of that card becomes zero, reducing your total cards point value. Another way is by combining 3 or 4 cards that runs in sequence and are of the same suite, example 2, 3, 4 and 5 of hearts or 4, 5, 6 and 7 of diamonds. When you have combined all your cards, then your cards have been reduced to zero and you won the hands.

Another way of winning is by knocking. Before the game begins, the top card of the stock pile is placed face up on the table determining the knock value for the game. If the card is 7, then the knock value for that hand is 7. You can knock when your card is reduced to that value, and players raise each other to get to that point value to legally knock and win the game. However, an opponent may still win the game when he or she undercuts the player who made the knock. It’s because the he or she can lay-off his or her unmatched cards to that of his opponent, significantly reducing his point value and under knocking the other player.

If you are not confident of your skills yet, there are many online sites where you can practice and play for fun and master the techniques in reducing your cards point value.
