History of Gin Rummy
Gin Rummy starts in the early years of 1900’s. It was first a card game for entertainment and a sort of distraction for families during the depression years, when money was tight and employment was very hard to find. The simple rules of the game made it very popular to young and old alike, providing a diversion long into the night. Families gather in the kitchen table to play this card game for fun, and laughter is present during the entire playing period.

Gin Rummy was an alternative card game from the more common Poker, Pinochle and Bridge. It was easy to learn and can be played anytime and anywhere, and can be played with different number of people. It was in fact familiar with many people since it was derived from the old fashion Knock Rummy. The structure of the game was relatively similar as well as the ease of playing and became popular than the first. In the year 1930’s, it started to become more and more the game card of choice for many individuals. And in the year 1970’s, Gin tournaments started and Gin centers were put up in major cities across the United States.
When it first started, this card game was for played for fun. But later on, people find it very interesting and they started to play more competitively and money was later involved turning Gin Rummy as a sports. Many fell in love with how easy it was to play, and the simple rules and method of scoring added to its over all appeal to the general public.
Later, additional rules were added and books were written to come up with a general standard game rule with which a professional game was to be governed. The rules were to place a premium on a player’s skill rather than on any give streak of luck. Players who where playing competitively finds the uniformed rules more challenging and winning became more fun and rewarding.
The rules that were then established are still the official rules that are being followed to this day. Many variations of the game have been added for more variety, but the basic rule of the game remains the same. Whether the game is to be played for fun in the kitchen table or in a competitive level, this card game provides the perfect setting for long hours of enjoyment.
