Luck and Skill in Playing Gin Rummy
If you are new to playing Gin Rummy, then you must have a pre-conceive idea that like any other card game, this also consist some element of luck. There are many players of card games who rely heavily on luck or “luck streak” as others call it, but in this game it takes more than just that. It is believed that this card game is more a game of skills rather than of luck and player must know the best way of winning the game and the strategies involved in improving their chances of winning.
More players, especially professional ones who play at competitive level will attest that in order to win in this game, one must need to master the object of the game and the strategies of forming melds and reducing a set of hands to zero or “gin”, rather than relying on luck alone. It is also equally important to master the knocking technique, in order to avoid “under knocking” by an opponent when you have exposed your cards on the table.
It is a play of numbers and one must be have a very good memory to remember the cards that have been already discard. This will give the player an edge over his opponent, since remembering the cards already on the discard pile will help him or her to plan moves accordingly. A good example is when 2 kings are already in the discard pile; it is no longer wise to hold on to your king, since you can no longer form a meld out of this card. A good memory evens out the element of luck, and you can still play competitively and win the game even if the opponent is running on a “luck streak” or was dealt with a very good set of cards.
Also, holding on middle numbers gives you a better chance of reducing your cards than that of your opponent. This is because middle numbers can be combined with lower or higher number cards and gives you the opportunity to use it to your advantage and maybe even lay out against your cards opponent when he or she makes a knock. The probability of making a running sequence out of middle cards is higher than that of lower number cards, since they can only be match with higher number cards.
Although luck happens even in playing Gin Rummy, and exceptional good cards can be dealt to you at anytime, it is only temporary. It can run up to many hands, but it does not last throughout the game, and a wrong move can still make you lose a hand. What is therefore ideal is to master the game structure, techniques and other elements of playing the game, and when your running on luck – make the most of it by playing your cards right. Nothing can be more frustrating to a player, either in competitive level or not, than losing a game with a good set of cards.
