Playing Gin Rummy
Gin Rummy is one of the easiest card games to play. The object of the game is simple, to reduce your set of 10 cards to a minimum before your opponent does. It can be played by two, four or eight. When there are two players involved, its called single or head to head, three players is captain’s play and partnership when 4 or more are involved in the game. Although this card game can be played with different number of people, it is best advice to open another table when there are more than 8 players, since it will be a lot more confusing for everyone and disputes are more likely to arise.
The object of the game, as mentioned earlier is to reduce your hand before another does. How it’s done is a set of skills that a player needs to develop and master. One way of winning is to form “melds” or to combine the same cards in your hands. Example, you have three kings in your hand; then you have a meld. Meaning these cards no longer has point count value. And since the object is reducing your cards value, the meld cards are no longer counted, only the remaining unmatched cards.
A meld is a combination of three or more cards with the same face value, like the one mentioned above. Or a combination of three or more cards of the same suit that runs in sequence like 2, 3, 4 and 5 of hearts or any other suit. And since the game is all about reduction, its best to meld the highest cards first so that you are left with the lowest “count value” card at hand. Cards starting from 10 to King have a count value of 10 points each, and Ace is never high and is valued as one. So if you’re dealt with a set of cards with 3 or more 10 point cards, the best strategy would be to meld them first.
The ideal reduction is to reduce your hand to zero points. It could be a combination of two melds consisting of 3 cards and one meld consisting of 4 cards giving you a total of 10 cards. You can also have a combination of two melds with 5 cards or two melds with 4 and 6 cards. Whatever melds combination, the important factor is that the combination must at least consist of 3 cards. When you’re able to reduce your hand to zero, it means you got a Gin.
Another way of winning the game is by knocking. Knocking means you’ve combined your cards and are left with the minimum count value and you are confident that your opponent has cards with greater count value than yours. Or, with some variation, a knock value is determined at the start of the game by placing the first stock of the pile face up. The best knocking strategy is to do it at the earliest possible time, by determining your opponents cards value through the cards that he’s already discard.
