Comparing a Beginner Player, a Good Player, and an Expert Player

Gin Rummy

When you take part in the game of gin rummy, you may quickly recognize who is a beginner player, a good player, and an expert player. It is very easy to do. But firstly you should recognize which kind of gamester you are.  Let.s examine a specific hand in which it will be easy to see the differences between the beginner, the good player, and the expert player.

For this instance we will be holding the cards of:
8 ♣, 7 ♣, 6 ♣, 3 ♦, 2 ♦, A ♦, K ♠, K ♥, J ♥, 10 ♥

There is just eight cards left in the stock, and it is our pick. Nobody is on a schneid, either side may go out in the game by ginning their hand, and all the sides may not use safe count. Moreover, we know for sure that our adversary is holding six or seven melded cards. Whe know exactly the following:

. He is not holding queens because 2 queens were earlier discarded
. He is not holding 9.s because 2 black 9.s were earlier discarded
. He is not holding 7 ♥, 8 ♥, 9 ♥ since one of these cards were earlier discarded

It is absolutely clear with the way the play has gone that the adversary has a pair of Kings, which is the same cards we have. If we detrude one of our kings then the adversary is likely to go gin. But we don.t need such step. Say that the 9 ♥ is picked off the top of the pack of cards which then gives us a third run just with the two kings. Then it is necessary to discard one card and each kind of players will do it differently.

The beginner . A player who doesn.t have a lot of experience in most cases will suppose that he need to discard the king. His explanation is that he think that there is no perspective of his knocking with nine melded cards unless he get one of the kings, and then he probably get a chance to pick up an ace or a deuce. So, the beginner will select the king to discard. And this card will give his adversary gin and he will lose the game.

The good player . Most likely that the good player would consider more of the hand then the previous kind of players. It means that he would realize that he hold nine melded cards but it is not still possible to bring his hand to any settlement. He would look through his perspectives of discarding the king and hoping that his adversary couldn.t knock, or he would decide going to the wall with the hand. So, there would be two possible variants: the game would end in a tie or would have to be replayed. It is most probably that a good player would discard from the A ♦, 2 ♦, 3 ♦ run because he is sure that if he break melds then the smallest runs in his hand will be broken.

The expert player . He would dissect the situation more completely then two preceeding kinds of players. He would obviously know that the adversary was holding on to the Q ♥ in order to defend himself from the expert going gin. He knows the adversary is playing it save by having seven melded cards, plus the two missing Kings and the Q ♥, so he understand without any thought that it is unacceptably to discard the King but the best variant is to throw a card that would make the adversary think it was safe to throw the Q ♥. It means that the expert would discard the 9 ♥ because the good player then would think that the Q ♥ wouldn.t be a factor because he would be sure that we would never break up a meld of 9 ♥, 10 ♥, J ♥. So, the adversary assume he can discard the Q ♥ considering the 9 and 10 are still in the pack of cards. And in the end of the game the expert player goes gin. The good player is likely to be astonished.

So, we explained three tactics of the game of three different kinds of players. We hope that now you will easy recognize what kind of gamesters you and your adversaries are.
