Scoring in the Game of Gin

Gin Rummy

Games of Gin are played in the matches that continue until a player hits a fixed score, in most cases it is 100. This score may be different, and the players can determine it before the game begins.

At the end of each hand, gamblers can get points in the next ways:

  • Knocking

If a gambler has a point value less than 10 (in Oklahoma Gin it will be a point value less than the knock card), in that case they can knock. This leads the hand to a close, and the two gamblers parallel one hand with the other.

In a case when after the layoff the knocker has less points (or equal number of points) in their hand than their adversary, they get a score equal to the dissimilarity between their hands.

For instance, I knock with four points in my hand. After laying off, my adversary still has 11 points in their hand. I’d ged seven points in the shortlist for that hand. We would then deal out the next hand.

  • Score for Gin

When a gambler knocks with nil points in their hand then it means that he goes Gin. When you go Gin you get a bonus equal 25 points. He also gets the right for the value of all the deadwood cards in his adversary’s hand. There is no laying off in a situation when a gambler goes Gin.

  • Undercutting Bonus

In the case when after laying off the knocking gambler has more points than their adversary, then their adversary is said to have undercut them. Any player who undercuts you gets 25 point bonus.

Moreover, the undercutting player also gets the dissimilarity in points between the two hands. For example, if I knock with  4 points in my hand, and after laying off you only have 1 point in your hand, then you’ll get 3 points and the 25 point bonus for a total of 28 points that hand.

  • Game Score

In a game where a fixed score is equal 100, the first gambler who hits 100 gets a 100 point bonus.

  • Line or Box Bonuses

Once someone has hit the certain score, gamblers get a box bonus equal 25 points for each game they have won over the match.

  • Whitewash bonus

If the game closes with just one player who has failed to score, then it is called a shutout or a whitewash. The winning gambler gets the bonus in this case, namely double the points for all of the points amassed over the hands, and double points for the game bonus. They don’t get double the box bonuses, if such thesis has not been fixed before the beginning of the game.
